The Best Time of Year to Visit the Grand Canyon

When Should You Go?

The Grand Canyon is open all year, but the season you choose shapes your whole trip. Weather, crowds, and even which parts of the canyon you can reach all change from month to month. The good news is there is no truly bad time to visit. There is just a best time for what you want. Here is how the seasons compare so you can plan the trip that fits you.

Spring and Fall: The Sweet Spots

For most travelers, spring (April to May) and fall (September to October) are the ideal times to visit. Temperatures are comfortable for hiking and sightseeing, the summer crowds thin out, and the light is beautiful for photos. These shoulder seasons avoid both the intense summer heat and the deep winter cold. If your dates are flexible, aim for these months to enjoy the canyon at its most pleasant.

Summer: Busy and Hot

Summer is the most popular time to visit, especially at the South Rim, so expect larger crowds and fuller parking lots from June through August. The South Rim sits around 7,000 feet, so its temperatures stay milder, but the inner canyon and the West Rim desert can be dangerously hot, often well over 100 degrees. If you visit in summer, start early, carry plenty of water, and save strenuous hikes for the cooler morning hours.

Winter: Quiet and Snowy at the South Rim

Winter brings a peaceful, uncrowded canyon and a chance to see the red rock dusted with snow, which is stunning. The South Rim stays open all year, though it can be cold and icy, so dress warmly and drive carefully. Note that the North Rim closes to vehicles for the winter, typically from mid-October to mid-May, because of heavy snow. The West Rim and the desert areas stay mild and accessible, making winter a great time for a Las Vegas day trip to Grand Canyon West.

Which Rim, Which Season?

Matching the rim to the season helps you plan.

  • South Rim: open all year, best in spring and fall, snowy but open in winter.
  • West Rim and the Skywalk: desert climate, great in the cooler months, very hot in summer.
  • North Rim: highest and greenest, open only from about mid-May to mid-October.

Knowing this ahead of time keeps you from driving hours to a rim that is closed or uncomfortably hot.
